18 Bethel wrestlers qualify for state

The Bethel Warriors wrestlers repeated as region champions in Dillingham this weekend and advanced 18 wrestlers to the state meet. The top four wrestlers in each class earned a berth to the state meet.

A total of eight Bethel wrestlers took first place in their weight class. Those include Tristan Evan at 98 pounds and Tecumseh Hensley at 106. Gage Hoffman won at 113, along with Josh Mendenhall at 132. Avery Coplin won at 138, plus Brandon Oulton at 152.

The warriors also excelled at the higher weight classes. Patrick Francisco at 170 and 195 pounder Scott Carpenter each took first.

In the team competition, Bethel beat out 2nd place Dillingham with 314 points over the Wolverines’ 226. Unalaska was 3rd, Aniak was 4th, and Akiachak 5th. 15 teams from Southwest Alaska competed in the region meet. The squad of 18 from Bethel will head to the state meet at ACS in Anchorage next weekend.
