The Yukon Kuskokwim Regional Advisory Council is meeting in Mountain Village this week. The meeting is the first to take place in a village. KYUK’s Shane Iverson is there and joined us during the midday news for this report.

Mike Simon, age 51, of Scammon Bay is accused of killing his girlfriend’s son and holding her and another person hostage. Alaska State Troopers say he surrendered Sunday morning after killing Irvin Wilson, age 19.

No local news on President’s Day

As you know, Monday, February 21st is President’s Day. Many organizations will be closed for the holiday, including KYUK. There will be no local news produced Monday, though we will broadcast scheduled NPR news programs.

Tune in on Tuesday morning for the return of local English and Yup’ik news.

The Calista Corporation shareholder committee hosted a public meeting in Bethel. The meeting was billed as an update on the proposed Donlin Creek Gold mine project, but it was also a show of solidarity between Calista’s leadership and local managers of Donlin.

The cultural center in Bethel will be full of dogs and their proud owners this Sunday, Feb. 20, for the 8th annual Dog Show. The show starts at 2 p.m. KYUK’s Angela Denning-Barnes spoke with Reyne Athanas, Cultural Center Coordinator, about the dog show details.
