At a hearing in Bethel, local residents and leaders voiced strong opposition to the state’s proposals to move villages like Kwethluk out of their customary voting district surrounding Bethel and into the Bristol Bay region hundreds of miles away. “It carves our area up into four parts, cuts off our closest neighbors,” testified Bethel Mayor Eric Middlebrook, “spreads us across six school districts (and) puts our representatives where they can not fairly represent us.”

Evan D. Evan, age 54 of Akiak, is charged with 34 counts for allegedly sexually abusing three minors between the years 1994 and 2010. There are 16, first degree counts of sexual abuse of a minor, and 18 counts in the second degree, all felonies. Read more →

Crowley Petroleum says the neighborhood surrounding a gasoline leak at their tank farm is safer after clean up crews used specialized foam to dampen the spills noxious fumes, and pumps to collect three thousand gallons of leaked gas mixed with water. Three household nearest the farm tank are still displaced, and crews will need to remove more of the gasoline before they can access the leak. I spoke with Crowley’s Public Information Officer, Jim Butler, to get the latest on the clean-up effort.

Crowley Petroleum Distribution is reporting a fuel leak at their gas station in Aniak. It’s their second leak in as many months in the same Kuskokwim River village. This latest spill means some residents won’t be able to return to their homes or offices that surround the spill area until it’s safe.

What do you want Bethel to look like in the next 20 years? That’s the question being posed to residents to help come up with a new 20-year plan. It’s called the City of Bethel Comprehensive plan update and its required by the state as a way to keep track of local priorities. The City of Bethel will also use it as a guideline. There’s a public hearing Thursday from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center. Long-time Bethel resident, Greg McIntyre, is part of a committee that has worked on a rough draft for the past six months:

Senator Murkowski was in the region recently, giving thanks to supporters and visiting a few villages on the coast. Murkowski spent time in Hooper Bay, Chevak and Bethel. She stopped into the KYUK studios, and reminisced about her historic write-in campaign.
