Bethel resident Tish Guinn has been deeply involved with the Ladies Auxiliary VFW for years. Now Guinn’s efforts have been recognized nationally. She has been named National Chairman for the Western Conference on the Americanism/Patriotic Instructor Program, which covers 15 states.

A Goodnews Bay man was accidentally shot in the hand when out moose hunting. Alaska State Troopers report that William Roberts, age 48 of Goodnews Bay, was out moose hunting on the Goodnews Bay River when his .30-06 rifle accidentally discharged striking him in the right hand. Read more →

Commercial fishing for salmon on the Lower Yukon closed by regulation on September 10. Although there were commercial openings further upriver, the two lowest districts of Y-1 and Y-2 took the lion’s share of harvests. Read more →

A new mobile phone app showcasing Rural Alaska has been downloaded in countries across the globe. One of it’s features is letting new ears hear the Yup’ik language for the first time.

One person was stabbed in the shoulder area and another in the wrist after a group of relatives were drinking together. 52-year-old Carrie Morgan of Aniak has been arrested for assault in the first and second degrees. Read more →

Calista, the Native for-profit corporation for the Y-K Delta, has hired a new chief financial officer. Sharon Weddleton will take over for current CFO, Dixie Retherford, when Retherford leaves at the end of the month.

Weddleton most recently has served as CFO for Bristol Industries, a subsidiary of Bristol Bay Native Corporation. Read more →

People are being charged with trying to import a keg of beer to Marshall. According to the Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team (WAANT) a group of four travelers were stopped at the airport Saturday, as they waited for their chartered flight to Marshall. Officers say they confiscated 7 bottles of alcohol and a keg of beer from the group. Read more →
