The first month of 2012 has proven to be a cold one in Bethel. In fact the -17.1 average daily temperature for January is a record.

An elder from Tununak passed away while attempting to travel from Nunapitchuk back to his village by himself. The trip is about 100 miles, and Andrew Chikoyak almost made it. However, the 74-year-old was found deceased near Nightmute, not far from his destination. Read more →

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE program, graduated its first class in the Y-K Delta Jan. 27. Graduates selected VPSO Rachel Nelson of Kwigillingok as their Outstanding Class Member.

Joe Lomack passed away in Bethel Saturday, Jan. 28, at the age of 87.

The Akiachak elder was well known throughout the region for his support of the Yup’ik people and their health.

Joe Charlie, age 22 of Newtok, was just a dark speck against a vast white landscape when he was spotted from an airplane. He had left his village Friday evening heading for Nunapitchuk. When he didn’t show by 9:30 Saturday morning, people notified the Alaska State Troopers.

The most successful drug prevention education program made it to Bethel for the first time.  The D.A.R.E. program, which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, is a national program that started in 1983.   It is an 80-hour training program for police officers, allowing them to teach the 10-week D.A.R.E. curriculum to young students.

BRHS basketball results

The Donlin Gold Classic basketball tournament wrapped up in Bethel over the weekend. On Friday the Warriors and Lady Warriors took on the Galena Hawks. Saturday the teams faced the Nome Nanooks.
