Bethel Regional High School’s Native Youth Olympics team faces off with 20 other teams from across western Alaska today and tomorrow. The meet from 4-7 p.m. tonight and 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. tomorrow at BRHS marks the first contest of the year for the hometown team. Read more →

Winifred Beans Yukegtaaq

The Tundra Women’s Coalition or TWC is where victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Y-K Delta can start their recovery and healing. It takes caring people to help victims overcome such trauma. TWC began recognizing those special people through their annual Yukegtaaq celebrations eleven years ago. The event is happening this weekend, when an elder from Mountain Village will be celebrated.

Hydropower is common in some parts of state, but there are no such projects in western or southwest Alaska. That could change though as oil prices, and in turn, energy prices, continue to raise. A dam project to power the Y-K Delta has already begun.

Governor Sean Parnell started the “Choose Respect” campaign in response to Alaska’s high rates of domestic violence and sexual assaults. The Tundra Women’s Coalition, or TWC, is an emergency shelter for such victims here in Bethel and the surrounding villages. TWC has held a peace walk for years, and today the Commissioner of the State of Alaska’s Department of Health and Social Services, William J. Streur was here to participate in the march and to build partnerships.
