An apparent shake-up at the native owned fuel business Northstar Gas has Bea from Bethel irate with her regional native corporation Calista. Calista feeds much of this week’s conversation as proxy packets begin pouring into mailboxes throughout the YK Delta and shareholders voice their opinions on the ballot.

Two adult men have been reported deceased in the past week, each from apparent suicides. Alaska State Troopers report that 38-year-old Clinton Henry Morgan of Aniak and 22-year-old Gusty Gusty of Stony River killed themselves.

For the most part, nearly all the Kuskokwim River ice is still intact besides the headwaters near Nicolai, which released April 19. However, much further downriver at Napaimute, 165 river miles from Bethel, the river ice moved Sunday night.

The Bethel Public Transit System was in danger of running out of funding. It took a big check from the Orutsararmuit Native Council to keep the program going for at least another year. On Friday ONC voted to match a grant by the City of Bethel to keep the wheels moving. Read more →

The Y-K Delta recently had a visitor from down under. This past Wednesday Larry Brandy, a researcher from the Australian National University, came to Bethel on a tour of indigenous cultures throughout the world. Brandy came to KUC’s campus to discover how educators in Alaska bridge the gap between the number of non-indigenous and indigenous students who attend universities. Read more →
