Although Ballot Measure 2 was defeated statewide, Y-K Delta voters favored the coastal management program in Tuesday’s primary election. The election was the first one under the amended redistricting plan. The Y-K Delta is split into 2 Senate Districts-R and S-and 3 House Districts—36, 37, and 38. All in all, voter turnout was low in all three house districts. However, the turnout varied greatly from village to village with some communities seeing a strong turnout, such as Kotlik, at 60 percent.

The Lower Kuskokwim School District Board of Education voted to start designing a cafeteria for the Bethel High School during a recent meeting. The nine-member board represents 23 village schools and all the Bethel schools.

The search for a Marshall man on the Yukon River has been called off by the Alaska State Troopers but local volunteers are still looking for him. The search for 33-year-old Paul Tinker has been on-going since August 20.

State salmon managers decided to hold one more commercial opener on the Lower Kuskokwim River for coho or silver salmon. Sub-district 1-A was open for a six hour period Monday. State managers had thought Friday’s opener would be the last, but later changed their mind. The coho run isn’t strong and the fish are smaller than normal, but Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game Area Management Biologist, Travis Ellison, said it was good enough for another haul.

The Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group ended their August meeting with unfinished business. The group collectively reviewed their work for the past summer, in order to have a common agreed upon memory of the 2012 fishing season.

After a month long investigation, law enforcement officers in Bethel report that they busted a resident for alleged bootlegging. On Thursday, August 23, the Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team (WAANT) arrested 46-year old Dominic Charles of Bethel.
