Herron sponsors bill for King salmon fund

Last year, Chinook salmon runs were so weak that the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers, along with Cook Inlet, were designated federal disaster zones. Now, a group of legislators from those regions want to create a permanent endowment that would fund research on the fish. Representative Bob Herron of Bethel is the lead sponsor of the endowment bill.

Federal caribou hunt extended to March 15th

The U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife has extended the federal caribou hunt in unit 18 to match the state hunt: they both close on March 15th.

The Annual Potlatch in Saint Mary’s lasts three days. The first night is dedicated to those being presented to the community and celebrated through song and dance. The guests can request any song and can call for “Pamyua” all evening. The hosts entertain their guests for the first half of the evening, and then it’s the guest’s turn. Sophie Evan was there, and gives us a closer look at the events that weekend.

Longtime YK Delta priest passes away

A well known Western Alaska priest has died. Father Henry Hargreaves served in Chevak, Hooper Bay, Nelson Island, some Yukon Villages and most recently in Bethel. KYUK’s John Active has this remembrance.

Bethel pool gets exterior colors

The Yukon Kuskokwim Regional Aquatic Health and Safety Center, or the Bethel Pool Project, is still years away from completion. But initial construction is scheduled to start in just weeks. A meeting held today brought together officials to hammer out some details–including what color the building should be.

Saint Mary’s is a town of over seven hundred residents. They held their annual Potlatch this past weekend along with their sister village, Pilot Station. The Yukon Potlatch brings each community together for a weekend of traditional Yup’ik spirituality and re-affirming of family ties.
