The Annual Potlatch in Saint Mary’s lasts three days. The first night is dedicated to those being presented to the community and celebrated through song and dance. The guests can request any song and can call for “Pamyua” all evening. The hosts entertain their guests for the first half of the evening, and then it’s the guest’s turn. Sophie Evan was there, and gives us a closer look at the events that weekend.

Saint Mary’s is a town of over seven hundred residents. They held their annual Potlatch this past weekend along with their sister village, Pilot Station. The Yukon Potlatch brings each community together for a weekend of traditional Yup’ik spirituality and re-affirming of family ties.

Lady Warriors take win

by Kristin Hall on February 23, 2013

The Bethel Lady Warriors switched their game into overdrive for the second half of the game against the Kotzebue Lady Huskies to secure a win. After trailing most of the game the Lady Warriors took the lead in the fourth quarter and never looked back, taking the win in their final home game of the season at the Warrior Dome. Congratulations are certainly in order for the high scorer of the evening, Rihanna Joseph, with 21 points.

Congratulations to the Bethel Warriors for dominating the court and taking two wins against the Kotzebue Huskies this weekend.
