Last year, an unprecedented 12-day King salmon fishing closure on the Kuskokwim River devastated the subsistence harvest of the fish. Instead of taking about 75,000 Kings as usual, residents only caught 20,000. However, this year should be different.

04.30.13 cvrf picThe Coastal Villages Region Fund recently held a board meeting here in Bethel. The commercial fishing organization represents 20 villages that are within 50 miles of the Bering Sea. Their involvement in the Bering Sea Pollock fishery, allows CVRF to be the sole commercial salmon and halibut buyer on the Kuskokwim and coast. Bethel students had a special visitor last week: 2014 Winter Olympic hopeful Liam Ortega. The Fairbanks athlete took time out of his training schedule to talk to young people about setting goals and overcoming adversity, something he knows all-too-much about after fighting back from a traumatic brain injury.

The statewide Native Youth Olympics meet wrapped up in Anchorage over the weekend. Several high school athletes from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta placed at the meet. In the girls Toe Kick event, Raven Phillips of Aniak won with a kick of 70 inches. Alecia Egoak with the Lower Kuskokwim School District took fourth place at 62 inches.

A statewide art competition for high school students wrapped up in Anchorage and Bethel freshman, Haley O’Brien, took first place in the sculpture category. O’Brien’s piece, “Untitled”, is a sculpture that depicts a skeletal hand, decorated in blue and white.

This week’s show brought our normal hosting crew back together for the first time in a few weeks. Calls came in steadily for the entire hour; and topics included recent theft of fish from the Tundra Women’s Coalition, an upcoming invasive species training, an update on the dredging of Brown Slough and the Bethel boat harbor, able-bodied people taking handicapped parking-spots, a petition for repeal Senate Bill #21, people trashing the tundra, and other upcoming local events.
