The main stem of the Kuskokwim River has gone without restrictions for salmon fishing this season. At least, up until now. Restrictions will go into affect this Friday in the form of 6-inch gear limitations.

The Qanirtuuq River in Quinhagak is world famous for sport fishing, and has been the only consistent commercial fishery on the Kuskokwim for many years. But this year, commercial fishing during the King salmon run has been closed, and the Native Village of Kwinhagak is asking that sports fishermen to also stand down.

The Bethel Police Department has officially moved its headquarters from the heart of downtown to Blueberry Subdivision. It’s a quiet new spot, just the wind and few birds fill the air when I arrive to tour the new facility. A three story building and separate garage sit on the tundra, donated to the city by the federal government, along with a two acre plot. It used to be an old FAA house that’s been converted to fit the department’s specific needs.

A former foster parent and daycare provider in Bethel has been arrested for charges that he sexually abused a 4-year-old. Bethel police arrested 69-year-old Peter Tony June 13 after investigating him for six months. They say he could have many more victims going back to the 1970s.

Nearly half of the subsistence fishermen found guilty of illegal fishing on the Kuskokwim River are appealing.Their attorney, James Davis Jr., filed the notice of appeal. He says 11 fishermen have decided to appeal the convictions that were handed to them at the Bethel District Court in May and filed the paper work June 2.
