The village of Akiak became an official venue for the Fairbanks Summer Art Festival at their community hall on Wednesday afternoon. Mike Stevens, one of the world’s most awarded harmonica players, and bluegrass recording artist Raymond McClain rode up the Kuskokwim by boat and walked into the village looking to make new connections. The case of the missing salmon, that’s what the Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group is wondering. The group met on July 24th, Wednesday morning to get the latest subsistence, commercial, and sport fishing updates, along with the latest numbers from the Bethel Test Fishery, and salmon counting weirs.

Yet another Friday morning has come and gone, and has brought another lively edition of “Talk Line” hosted by Joe Moses and Zach Fansler. Topics of conversation included; but were not limited to, the bias in media coverage of the George Zimmerman trial, a special action request and public hearing on Caribou regulations, the need for more healthy youth activities in Bethel, the barge stuck in Steamboat Slough, and one caller mentioned the lack of parental supervision of children seen swimming in the river.

Bethel teens arrested for stealing three cars in one night_mixdownThree cars were stolen on the same night in Bethel this week and police say the same teenagers are responsible. Bethel resident, Brian Lefferts is one of the burglary victims. His green 1997 Chevy truck was stolen July 24th. But it wasn’t the first time his family had their car taken over night. Just a few weeks earlier, on July 8th, their silver 2008 Toyota 4-runner was stolen.

Gene “Buzzy” Peltola Jr.

Gene Peltola Jr., also known as Buzzy, has resigned from running the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge based in Bethel. He has taken a promotion and is moving to Anchorage to become the Assistant Regional Director for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He will head the subsistence program at the Office of Subsistence Management.

A young man from Palm Harbor, Florida died in a four wheeler accident in Bethel early Thursday. 25-year-old Troy David Deloach died after wrecking an ATV on Standard Oil Road near the boat launch.
