Donlin Gold must secure dozens of state and federal permits before it can break ground on the proposed mine. But many of those permits will hinge upon the multi-thousand page Environmental Impact Statement. Engineers and scientists are now building the thick document that will explain the effects of different mine configurations and the support infrastructure.

Volunteer search teams found additional foot prints and broken branches on Tuesday afternoon as they search for Nick Cooke of Bethel and James Lee Napoka of Tuluksak who have been missing since Wednesday, October 23. According to the Bethel Search and Rescue (BSAR) website the tracks were found, along with a gas can, about a mile from where their boat was overturned and they were heading in the direction of Tuntutuliak about 10 miles away. After eight years of exchanging letters from their homes in rural Alaska and Vermont, two pen pals met each other face to face this month in Eek. KYUK’s Ben Matheson has the story.

Searchers have found a few clues recently in the search for 37-year-old Nick Cooke of Bethel and 46-year-old Jim Lee Napoka of Tuluksak. The two men had been boating to Tuntutuliak for a funeral on Oct. 23 but they never showed up. They were reported missing Oct. 25.

The Central Bering Sea Advisory Committee and the State of Alaska Department of Fish and Game wrapped up a 3-day meeting in Bethel Sunday. Read more →

The Bethel Warriors scored 591 team points at this weekend’s home meet, beating second place Dillingham, who tallied 334 points. The Warriors were particularly strong in the lower weight classes. Bethel wrestlers Tristan Evans and Paul Hunter made it to the finals of the for the 98 pounders, with Evans taking the victory by forfeit.
