The latest round of Bering sea storms beat up the southwest Alaska coastline, including Newtok. The community’s move to the site on Nelson Island may be more pressing than ever, but the long relocation process is in a holding pattern due to a tribal council dispute.
After delaying a look at raising water and sewer rates, the Bethel City Council is set to take up the complex issue tonight. A proposed memorandum would direct city staff to write up ordinances that would make the water and sewer operation pay for itself. The city currently has to transfer money from the general fund to cover costs. The future of the sewage lagoon depends on that cost structure, according to Mayor Joe Klejka.

A 19-year-old Kalskag man is facing felony burglary charges for allegedly breaking into the store in Kalskag. Troopers earlier this month received a report of destroyed food items and damage to the facility and office. On Friday, troopers arrested Jeremy Mike and brought him to the jail in Bethel. He’s facing two class c felonies: one for burglary and another for theft over 500 dollars.

Governor Sean Parnell today appointed Nathaniel Peters to the Bethel District Court. Peters has experience in the local court system as he served in Bethel with the Alaska Public Defender Agency from 2003 to 2006.
The Lancer Smith Invitational Wrestling tournament drew 39 teams to Palmer this weekend including large and small teams from around the state. Bethel, Aniak, Napaskiak, and Quinahagak all competed. Bethel finished in 8th place with a team total of 137.5 points, right behind 7th placed Kotzebue and in front of 9th placed Nome.
