City of Bethel Parks and Recreations Director Rhonda Sargent says the neighborhood of Tundra Ridge noticed their park was deteriorating.

“The equipment had aged so much that it had become unsafe so the neighborhood volunteers got together. And Amanda Colvin was the lead volunteer, she approached the director, Janet Athanis, about rebuilding the park,” says Sargent.

60 mushers are signed up for Iditarod 2015. Bethel’s Pete Kaiser is back for his sixth running of the last great race, while Aniak’s Richie Diehl returns for his third. There’s no registration yet for Akiak’s Mike Williams Junior.

Donlin Gold and the Kuskokwim Corporation have signed a surface rights agreement for the proposed gold mine located 120 miles upriver of Bethel. The deal gives the native corporation rights to some construction contracts and sets financial terms for decades to come.

Gillnet fishing restrictions have been relaxed on the lower Kuskokwim river.

From the mouth to Chuathbaluk subsistence fishing for chum and sockeye salmon with 6-inch gillnets, up to 50 fathoms long will be open until further notice. Managers say chum and sockeye far outnumber kings at this point. Managers are also opening up dipnetting to 24/7 on the same stretch. Fishermen must release any king salmon caught back to the river. The City of Bethel is bringing back the trails committee to work on the community’s system of trails for walkers, bikers, ATV drivers and snowmachiners.

A meeting Wednesday night will include discussion of how to separate trails for pedestrian and motorized transportation. They will look at plans for improving current trails and sort through a large set of recommendations in the Bethel Comprehensive plan.
