30-day migratory waterfowl closure set to begin

by Sophie Evan on June 5, 2012

The Yukon Kuskokwim Fish and Wildlife service says the spring waterfowl season will soon close for 30 days during the nesting season. Field reports show that the initiation of nesting has started for all migrating waterfowl.

No harvest of migratory birds and their eggs is allowed from June 9 to July 9. This month-long closure is designed to protect migrating waterfowl while they nest, lay their eggs, and fledge their ducklings. Special closures for Cackling Canada Geese and Black Brant are also in effect, until the young birds fledge.

The 30-day migratory waterfowl closure comes after consulting with AVCP’s waterfowl conservation committee.
