Akiak leader says village won’t follow new fishing restrictions

Former state representative and Akiak tribal leader, Ivan M. Ivan, says his community will continue to fish for king salmon in the tributary rivers they have relied on for thousands of years. That could raise some eyebrows with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game who last week announced that subsistence fishing for kings was off-limits in those waters where escapement numbers have reached new lows.
