Alcohol headed to Chevak and Kipnuk seized

A 21-year-old Native male was contacted August 2 at a local air carrier in Bethel suspected of smuggling alcohol into the village of Kipnuk which is a dry community. Investigation revealed that seven bottles of R & R whiskey were seized from his person.

The man is being charged with importation of alcohol and will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for review. His name has not been released.

Also on Aug. 2, a freight box headed for the village of Chevak was found to contain eight bottles of alcohol, discovered by the Bethel Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team.

The estimated value of the alcohol in the village is $1,600.

Chevak is a local option community which bans the sale and importation of alcohol.

Investigation continues in this case.
