Alcohol seized on its way to Chefornak

by Angela Denning-Barnes on August 16, 2013

Drug enforcement troopers seized alcohol they say was headed to the village of Chefornak. On Aug. 15, officers with the Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team or WAANT unit contacted an adult male at the Bethel airport. He was headed to Chefornak and allegedly had eight bottles of alcohol in his backpack.

The man’s name has not been released. A case report charging him with importing alcohol is being forwarded to the Bethel District Attorney’s office.

The village of Chefornak is a local option community where residents voted to ban the sale and importation of alcohol.
