Richie Diehl did not quite know what to think or say when he crossed the start/finish line in Bethel. All he could do was praise his team.

“Pretty amazing what my dogs did today,” He said. “They’ve never really had this pressure on them.”

From Aniak, Diehl was the fastest local musher, besting last year’s 2nd and 3rd place finishers Mike Williams Jr. of Akiak and Pete Kaiser of Bethel. Diehl also beat out two four-time Iditarod champions in Lance Mackey and Martin Buser.

Diehl said his team came on strong during the return trip from Lower Kalskag to Tuluksak, after the halfway loop around Aniak and Whitefish Lake.

He said he prepared with long training runs from Aniak to Bethel and back with Pete Kaiser.

Diehl hopes to build on the momentum of his K300 run by possibly entering the Paul Johnson Memorial 450 or the Kobuk 440 sled dog races.
