Bethel Boys win in 3A State Tournament opening round; Girls unsuccesful after holding halftime lead

by Shore on March 20, 2014

Both of Bethel’s varsity basketball teams qualified for the 2014 ASAA 3A State Basketball Tournament, and both teams had games on Thursday morning.

The Lady Warriors took the floor of Sullivan Arena at 9:45am for tip-off against the top team from the Aurora Conference- the Lady Hawks of Galena.

The first quarter was an exciting 8 minutes of basketball, and by the quarter’s end it was tied- 10 to 10. Bethel’s second quarter was the best quarter either team would have throughout the game, and the 12 points they added in that quarter would give them a 22-18 lead. Coming out of the halftime break the Lady Warriors would follow up their best quarter of the game with a less than stellar performance in the following two quarters.

Galena’s Lady Hawks got a huge boost in momentum on a pair of three pointers in the third quarter, and had squared things up by the end of the quarter at 29-29. Bethel would follow up their 7-point third quarter, with a 6-point fourth quarter, yet they still had several opportunities to tie or even retake the lead. Galena only needed 7 points in the fourth quarter to win the game, and that’s exactly what they got to hold on for a 36-35 win.

The Lady Warriors next game is a consolation match-up on Friday at 9:45am. KYUK will have live coverage of that game in lieu of “Talk Line.”

The boys of Bethel took then took the floor following the Lady Warriors for their 11:30AM tip-off against the Huskies of Delta Junction.

The Warriors came out and absolutely dominated the Huskies in the opening quarter 15-6.
The Huskies came out and absolutely dominated the Warriors in the following quarter to take a 25-23 lead at half.

The third quarter remained close throughout nearly it’s entirety, until the waning seconds.  Bethel’s Theodore Naneng took a successful buzzer-beater three-point shot and simultaneously drew a foul. And as every clutch player should- he buried his free throw to complete the four-point-play and give his team a 40-36 lead.

The fourth quarter was uncomfortably close, and Delta Junction had several chances to tie as time expired, but Brett Smith would get a clutch defensive rebound to put a stop to the Huskies’ hopes.  Bethel’s 52-50 win gets them into the Championship Semifinal against Grace Christian.

The Championship Semifinal is Friday at 7pm, with live play-by-play coverage on KYUK 640AM.
