Thursday, communities across Alaska are hosting marches and rallies as part of Governor Sean Parnell’s Choose Respect initiative, including in Bethel. Bethel’s event will take place at noon, Thursday at Tundra Women’s Coalition, or TWC, located on 6th Avenue. Susan Taylor with TWC, says she’s hoping for a large group.

“We start at TWC, in front of the building – here some words about respect and kinda do a rally there and then we walk over with our signs and banner, we walk over to the college and then they’ll be a potluck, some freebees, door prices and some more words and some door prizes and probably end about 2 and then they’ll be vehicles provided to give people rides back to TWC where they parked their cars.”

There will words from Bethel elder Mary Beaver and General Michael Bridges with the Alaska National Guard.

Governor Sean Parnell started the Choose Respect campaign in 2009 to to build awareness about the problems of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse in Alaska. The last Thursday in March is the designated date that communities are encouraged to do marches and other activities. Last year more than 150 Alaska communities participated in ‘Choose Respect’ marches, rallies, and community events.

Signs will be provided for marchers and people driving by the march are encouraged to support it by honking.
