A Bethel high school teacher has been chosen as a semi-finalist for the top teacher of the year by the national TV show, “Live with Kelly and Michael”. Amanda O’Boyle, also known as Mandy, has made the show’s top 12 teachers semi-finals. She’s been a special education teacher at BRHS for 8 years.

According to a letter posted on the show’s website, O’Boyle goes above and beyond what’s expected of a good teacher and is highly dedicated to her students. She often stays after hours to help them with their work and attends their extra curricular activities. All the while, O’Boyle gracefully deals with her own challenge of having Cerebral Palsy. The letter says that she is a great example for the students she works with and “has shown, time and time again, that a person is more than his or her disability or circumstances.”

Now people have the chance to vote for her as their favorite teacher finalist.

She was announced as a semi-finalist today and the voting for the top five finalists happens until Monday at 1 p.m. Alaska time. People can vote at the show’s website once each day through Monday.

On Tuesday, the five top teacher finalists will be announced during the show.
