Bethel Warrior Basketball: Boys win big; Girls rally but come up short

by Shore on January 31, 2014

Both Varsity squads from Bethel Regional High School entered their second game of the Donlin Gold Classic basketball tournament coming off wins in the prior night. The boys squad was able to continue their winning ways, and cruised to a big win over the Bulldogs of Nikiski High School 58-28. Bethel’s Ito Naneng led all scorers in Friday night’s opening match-up with 23 points.

The Lady Warriors then took the the floor following the boys’ decisive victory, and went on to engage a second exciting and close battle in as many nights. The Lady Warriors were held scoreless in the first quarter, but were not trailing by much as they were able to hold the Lady Bulldogs of Nikiski to just three points. Bethel would re-gain the lead by the end of the first half, but that was the last time they would end a quarter with a leadying tally. The final minutes of the game provided piles of back-and-forth action and scoring, and Bethel would have an opportunity to tie the game late but were unable to convert their scoring chances. The final buzzer would sound with Nikiski winning 35-32. Bethel was led in scoring by Angela Thomas and Riana Joseph, both of whom finished with 8 points.

Both varsity squads are back in action tomorrow night. The Lady Warriors take on Newhalen starting at 6:00pm, and the boys take on Bristol Bay in the 2014 Donlin Gold Classic championship game starting at 7:30pm.
KYUK 640-AM will have live coverage of both those games.
