The Bethel Regional High School boys varsity basketball squad won their opening round match-up of the Western Conference Tournament on Thursday night against the Kotzebue Huskies in blowout-fashion, 51 to 21. Bethel was lead in scoring by Brett Smith’s 16 points. The boys squad can clinch their State Tournament berth with a win in Friday evening’s championship game. That game is scheduled for Friday evening at 8pm, and KYUK will have live coverage on 90.3FM. If Bethel’s boys lose that game they will be forced to play their way into the State tournament by winning their way through the consolation bracket; as their female counterparts must do to keep their season alive.
Speaking of their female counterparts- the Lady Warriors of Bethel opened up their Western Conference Tournament on Thursday with a hard-fought defeat at the hands of the Lady Huskies of Kotzebue, with a final score of 46-39. The Lady Warriors held the lead after the first quarter of play, but that would be the last time they would see a lead when a buzzer would sound, and by the end of the first half Kotzebue led 24-16. Bethel continued to fight valiantly throughout the last two quarters, but Kotzebue continued to have an answer for nearly everything Bethel threw at them. The Lady Huskies advance to the Championship game against Barrow to be played on Friday. The Lady Warriors drop to the consolation-side of the bracket, and must win the remainder of their games in this tournament to receive a State Tournament berth. The Lady Warriors next game is Friday at 2:45pm. KYUK will have coverage of that game on 90.3FM.
