Bethel Warriors Win Home Wrestling Tournament

The Bethel Warriors scored 591 team points at this weekend’s home meet, beating second place Dillingham, who tallied 334 points. The Warriors were particularly strong in the lower weight classes. Bethel wrestlers Tristan Evans and Paul Hunter made it to the finals of the for the 98 pounders, with Evans taking the victory by forfeit.

At 106, Tecumseh Hensley brought in a 4th place finish by winning 2 of 3. Bethel’s 113 pounder Gage Hoffman won by major decision over Danny Miller of Dillingham, and 120 pounder Brandon Evans won by fall over Hooper Bay’s Robert Naneng.

Middle weights were organized into pools. At 126, Carlie McIntyre of Bethel won two matches in the top pool. Likewise, in the 132 pound pools, three area wrestlers made it to the championship round and earned ties for 4th place finishes. Those were Josh Mendenhall and Aaron Olsen of Bethel plus Jerome Williams of Napaskiak. Mendenhall won all four of his matches.

The championship bouts out of pool action at 138 had Bethel’s Evan Dyment and Avery Coplin, who both won 2 of 3. At 145 Bethel’s John Oulten won 4 matches in the top pool.

The top regional finisher at 160 was Harold Hoelscher of Hooper Bay in 3rd while Bethel’s Patrick Francisco won at 170. At the 182 level, Emmonak’s Eric Jones took 3rd, defeating Drew Pekar of Bethel.

195 pounder Stefan Greene from Pilot Station took second place. Aniak’s Austin Sjong made it to the finals at 220, but was injured and forfeited to a Dillingham wrestler. At 285, Johnny Beans of Pilot Station won by pinning New Stuyahok’s Peter Blunka.
