The Bethel Warriors are now back-to-back-to-back-to-back state champions. They clinched the title Saturday at ACS in Anchorage by defeating 2nd place Kotzebue with 217 points over Kotzebue’s 167.5.
A total of six 2nd place finishes propelled Bethel to the title. They started off early with the silver medals, as 98-pounder Tristan Evan brought in the first 2nd place. Tecumseh Hensley kept the momentum going at 106 with his 2nd place finish and Gage Hoffman added a silver at 113.
The next silvers came at 132 and 138 as Josh Mendenhall and Avery Coplin each advanced to the title bout. Scott Carpenter earned the warriors their final silver at 195.
Bethel’s depth won the meet, as they added three bronze medals and racked up the team points. Those wrestlers were Carlie McIntrye at 126, Aaron Olson at 132, and Patrick Francisco at 170. Avery Chickak added a 4th place finish at 120.
The Warriors graduate seven seniors. Coach Darren Lieb says it was among the most fun and coachable teams Bethel has ever had.
