The Bethel Lady Warriors’ final game of the Kenai River challenge started off on a positive note, but as the game continued things would turn sour for Bethel as the Soldotna Lady Stars proved to be the better squad in the Saturday afternoon match-up.
Bethel would score first and the Lady Warriors’ quickness gave Soldotna fits as the Lady Stars committed several flat-footed reach-in fouls. The Lady Warriors would hold a lead deep into the first quarter of play, but would fail to hold that lead as the opening quarter came to a close with the score 8-7 in Soldotna’s favor. The Lady Stars put up 20 points in the second quarter, however a few key players for Soldotna would find themselves in foul trouble as the half came to a close. Bethel went into the locker-room trailing 28-19 at half.
With key play-makers for Soldotna on the bench due to foul trouble Bethel would appear to have an advantage; however, the depth of Soldotna’s bench proved to be greater than originally expected as the Lady Stars would extend their lead to 39-28 after three quarters of play.
As the fourth and final quarter played out Bethel’s deficit would continue to grow, and the scoring gap became easy recognizable as insurmountable. Both teams foul-count ran high, but with both teams in the bonus it would prove to be moot and Soldotna would cruise to a 57-38 victory. Bethel’s high-scorer for the third consecutive game was Riana Joseph who finished with 14 points.
Bethel finished the round-robin tournament with a record of 1-2, and Soldotna’s tournament record improved to 3-0 with Saturday’s victory. The Lady Warriors’ next match-up will come in the opening round of the ACS Tournament to be held on January 2nd through 4th.
