The Nanooks of Nome traveled into Bethel for a Friday night showdown in the WarriorDome. Throughout the game the visiting Nanooks were able to do something that no other team has done thus far this season- bottle up the explosive offense of Bethel’s Theodore “Ito” Naneng.
Bethel took a solid lead early in the game, and out-rebounded the taller Nome squad in the opening quarters while racking up a 22-15 lead after the first half of play. Nome continued their aggressive play in the second half, but both teams came away from the third-quarter adding 7 points to their total and the quarter would come to a close with Bethel leading 29-22. The final quarter was by far the most exciting of the game as Nome was able to close the gap on Bethel several times, yet Bethel would not relinquish their lead at any point in the fourth-quarter. The Warriors went on to win the first of their two games against Nome in as many nights 41 to 34.
Bethel’s Brett Smith led all scorers with 14 points, while Naneng chipped in an additional 11 points in the Warriors victory.
Bethel’s next game is at home on Saturday against Western Conference rival Nome; game time is scheduled for 7:30pm. KYUK will not have live coverage of that game, but will air the BRHS Lady Warrior match-up at Nome at that same time.
