BRHS student wins statewide sculpture contest
“Untitled” by Haley O’Brien
A statewide art competition for high school students wrapped up in Anchorage and Bethel freshman, Haley O’Brien, took first place in the sculpture category. O’Brien’s piece, “Untitled”, is a sculpture that depicts a skeletal hand, decorated in blue and white.
It is made of wire and clay and the fingers can move. In her artist’s statement, O’Brien says the project was inspired by the Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday which remembers loved ones.
The competition was put on by the Alaska School Activities Association.
O’Brien is taught by Jen Bradley at Bethel Regional High School.
