BSAR says river near Bethel unsafe

BSAR logoThe volunteer group, Bethel Search and Rescue, conducted an aerial survey of river ice conditions near Bethel, Nov. 26. The group says it is not yet safe for snow machine travel due to numerous holes.

Here is what they saw:

-2 holes in front of Bethel
-4-5 holes toward Straight Slough
-1 hole by Joe Pete’s
-2 holes in Straight Slough – big hole by upper mouth, smaller one at lower mouth
-Big hole by point of island in front of Gweek River
-2 holes by mouth of Gweek River – SNOWMACHINING FROM AKIACHAK OR AKIAK IS GREATLY DISCOURAGED
-Hole by upper end of old airport at Akiachak
-Half-dozen holes from Max Olick’s to upper mouth of Kuskokuak Slough
-Big hole at upper mouth of Kuskokuak Slough
-3 holes above Akiak around Hall’s Corner
-20 or more holes around Tuluksak
