The girls basketball team from Chefornak won the Coastal Conference championship for the second year in a row on Saturday night, defeating Kipnuk 46-31 in a decisive win. Lady Shaman, and senior, Theresa Mark led the way for her team putting up 24 points and earning her squad a place at the 1A Alaska State Basketball tournament. Mark, was assisted by her sister Caroline Mark, a sophomore, who had 11 points in the contest.
Only the Coastal Conference champion advances to the state tournament. The Coastal Conference includes all the village schools of the Lower Kuskokwim School District, it’s one of the largest conferences in the state.
The Kipnuk Falcons made a big splash at their first appearance at the tournament. The school was recently re-classified as a 1A school, down from their 2A status in previous years. The spent much of their season practicing in the school hallways because their gymnasium has been under construction. They were led by freshman Alecia Egoak who tallied over half their points with 16.
The Lady Shamans will be advancing to state for the second time in a row. They were conference runner’s up the two years prior.
The 1A Alaska State Basketball Tournament begins Saturday, March 16th. The championship game is on Wednesday, March 20th.
