Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Awareness Month and KYUK

by Mike Martz on October 12, 2011

October is domestic violence and sexual assault awareness month.  Alaska has the unfortunate distinction of having the highest rates of domestic violence and sexual assault in the country.  Governor Sean Parnell has made domestic violence and sexual assault awareness and prevention a top priority for his administration.

Here in Bethel, the Tundra Womens Coalition, in partnership with other local and statewide agencies, sponsors a series of events each October related to heightening awareness about this serious problem and how to prevent violence from occurring.  An example is the annual Peace Walk.  KYUK will announce these events as they occur throughout the month.

In partnership with the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, KYUK has produced a series of 9 public service announcements that bring attention to domestic violence and sexual assault and offer ways to prevent the violence.  Listen for these locally produced spots featuring local voices on both 640 AM and 90.3 FM.  They offer sound advice from elders and councilors.

KYUK will continue to partner with the Tundra Womens Coalition and other social service agencies in Bethel and throughout the Delta to work toward ending the scourge of domestic violence and sexual assault in our region.

Thank you for your continued support of KYUK, public media for the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta.
