Governor declares disaster in Kotlik

by APRN on November 18, 2013

Governor Sean Parnell has issued a disaster declaration for storm damaged areas along the western Alaska coast. Saturday the governor held a town hall meeting in Kotlik where concerns included the well-being of the elders and lost food stores. Kotlik was among the worst hit as the storm damaged the water and sewer distribution system.

State Emergency incident Commander Mark Roberts says 18 communities have reported impacts. Roberts says there have been no reports of injuries or anyone missing. He attributes that to good planning by communities before the storms started.

Kotlik and Unalakleet are still working to get their water systems restored. Robert says Kotlik has a week’s worth of drinking water in their storage tank. The pump that washed out during the storm has been recovered and they are working to fix it. Unalakleet has a temporary water collection system above ground.
