The Aniak Halfbreeds boys and girls teams left little in doubt as both claimed championships in the Greater Kuskokwim Conference Saturday night in Akiachak.

The girls team cruised through the tournament and through the conference final against the Akiachak Lady Huskies, defeating the home team 60- 26.

Senior Trisha Morgan led the way for Aniak with 31 points and Senior Raven Phillips contributed 14. Akiachak’s Kenisha Bingham led the Lady Huskies with 9 points.

The Halfbreed boys team was only slightly less impressive in their final staying on top of Akiachak the entire game. The Huskies came within 4 points middway through the second period but that would be as close as they got as Aniak pulled away and kept a double digit lead until the final minute. Thats’s when Akiachak closed the gap with tenacious driving by freshman point gaurd Fritz Jackson who piled on 29 points in the game. Aniak was able to run-out the clock and claim the conferce title with a 68-61 victory.

Aniak seniors Riley Morgan scored 23 points and Austin Sjong scored 20.

Both Aniak teams advance to the 1A Alaska State Basketball Tournament in Anchorage.
