A few travelers were arrested for allegedly trying to bring alcohol into dry communities.
The first one was on Saturday the 24th when drug enforcement officers contacted 23-year-old Heather Poe of Bethel. Poe was waiting for a flight to Chevak when Troopers with the Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team found two bottles of alcohol on her person, and eight more in her checked luggage. Poe was found to be in violation of her probation conditions from a previous felony charge. She was arrested and brought to the State Jail here in Bethel.
The second arrest happened the next day on Sunday the 25th. WAANT reports that 26-year-old Eva G. Night of Hooper Bay was observed drinking alcohol from a bottle during a flight to that village. The flight returned to Bethel where Night was arrested and a single bottle of alcohol seized.
Both Hooper Bay and Chevak are local option communities where the possession, sale and manufacturing of alcohol are illegal.
