Jacki Larson wins Elia Sallafie Memorial Race

Jacki Larson won the three-day Elia Sallafie Memorial Sled Dog Race in Bethel, March 24. It is the premier race of the year for its sponsors, the Bethel Spring Mushers’ Club. This year, it featured a $28,000 race purse and a tough trail of 25 miles the first two days and 30 miles the third day.

Larson handily beat out his competition with a 12 minute lead in total elapsed time. He finished in 4 hours, 57 minutes, and 34 seconds, taking home $4,500 for the win. In second place was Johnny Evan of Napaskiak taking home $4,000. His time was 5:09:24. George Manutoli of Akiachak took third with a time of 5:11:10, winning $3,500.

Thirteen mushers finished the race.

Jeffrey Chingliak of Akiachak won the red lantern which was a special prize this year: a complete wooden sled donated by Wasilla musher, Michael Goosen.
