Jackie Larson of Napaskiak won the race, defeating defending champion Mike Williams, Jr. of Akiak. Steve Olive of Bethel took third, and Lewis Pavilla of Kwethluk took fourth.
Jackie Larson says his team did excellent. Larson finished over a half hour ahead of the rest of the pack. He was able to keep to the cross-tundra trail even in the blowing snow while other mushers got lost.
Jackie didn’t train the dogs. The team was a combination of his and his brother’s dogs that his brother has been training all season. Larson’s brother is Father Alexander Larson of Kwethluk. He’s formerly known as Huey Larson and a real hot rod on the race trail. He’s pretty much won every race he’s put his mind too.
Father Alexander Larson would like to figure out how to win the K300 but he’s not sure if that’s in his future or not. For this 45-mile race, he doesn’t think he did any kind of special training. He used a four wheeler until about three weeks ago and hasn’t done many runs over 30 miles because of icey conditions.
