Akiachak’s John George made it two weeks in row. The winner of last week’s 40 mile race came across the finish line Sunday afternoon in first place in the rescheduled Akiak Dash, earning 3,400 dollars. He was followed 6 minutes later by George Manutoli.

George is fresh off a run in this weekend’s Walter Williams races, in which he took second place. He said picking his best dogs for the 37 degree heat proved critical.

“I had to pick like seven out of twelve, so I took the ones that can eat, and take the heat, you know,” said George.

George was third into Akiak for the one hour rest. He was close to Punky Phillips and George Manutoli at the halfway mark. On the way back, his team led by Shelby and Pancake was able to open up a gap.

“I don’t know, if they pushed too early, so I kind of backed off and made a load in my sled you know,” said George.

George reported a few soft points, but mostly a well packed route that’s been hardened by snowmachiners.

Akiachak’s Manutoli earned 2nd place driving dogs from John Simon.

“I’m proud of my team, they have no milage and to take second like this, is good, it feels good,” said Manutoli.

With his leader Deborah leader in front, the team faced brutal heat on the second half of the race.

“It’s kinda like Hawaii so, some of them are overheating,” said Manutoli.

3rd place went to Kwethluk’s Herman Phillip, driving dogs from Max Olick’s Bad River Kennel. He was 36 seconds in front of Aniak’s Isaac Underwood. Jen Peeks was 5th driving Pete Kaiser’s team.
