Johnny Evan wins Camp Out Race

Johnny Evan of Napaskiak won the Camp Out Race, March 31. He beat out 13 other teams for victory, earning $1,650. Less than 2 minutes behind Evan was Elia Fisher of Kwethluk, running dogs from Max Olick’s Bad River Kennels. Fisher earned $1,485 for second. Finishing third was Gilbert Phillip of Akiak running dogs from the Williams kennel.

The Camp Out Race has mushers camp out with their teams overnight. Mushers started in Bethel Saturday and ran their teams 44 miles upriver to a camping spot on the Gweek River. Sunday, they raced back to Bethel, leaving in the order that they showed up to camp.

Isaac Underwood of Aniak finished fourth, Casie Stockdale of Bethel took fifth and Brian Berube of Bethel took sixth.

The race featured a purse of $8,255. It is sponsored by the K300 Race Committee.
