Kalskag to Aniak travelers beware

by Angela Denning-Barnes on December 10, 2012

There is a travel advisory for the trail between Kalskag and Aniak on the Kuskokwim River. Bethel Search and Rescue says there are some trail hazards there, including a large open hole close to the trail.

They say near Harry Faulkner’s gravel pit at Birch Tree crossing (approx. 15 miles above Kalskag) the trail squeezes between the hillside on the north bank and a large open hole out towards the middle of the river.

BSAR says the ice in this area is relatively new; only up to 6 inches thick as of December 7. Also, water levels in the river are continuing to drop, so much of the ice is hanging, cracking, and dropping off the beach.

Travelers through this area should use extreme caution and be on alert for changes in the ice. BSAR says traveling at night or bad weather is not recommended at this time.

A crew from Kalskag marked the trail on December 6 and 7.
