Martinez has been training for six years now, since he was 7 years old, at the Okomoto school of Karate in Anchorage.

Martinez says he has always been interested in the martial arts as a child watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He was motivated to learn karate after watching a karate demonstration in Anchorage.

Martinez also won three World titles at the US World Open Martial Arts Championships in July.
