The Lower Kuskokwim School District has announced Paula Simon of Newtok as the 2013 LKSD Teacher of the Year. Simon has been a teacher at the Ayaprun School in Newtok for ten years, after graduating from McNeese State University in Louisiana, and has taught Special Education and Elementary classrooms.

According to a press release from the school district, Simon was nominated for the Teacher of the Year award by her peers and administration in Newtok. Simon was presented the award during the LKSD District Inservice, September 6.

The LKSD Teacher of the Year award is representative of the talent and commitment exhibited throughout the 400 educators in LKSD. According to the district, Simon was selected for this award in recognition for her professionalism and leadership within the school as well as her tireless commitment to providing many opportunities for the students of Newtok outside of the classroom. She has developed active student council and Future Educators of Alaska programs, and takes the lead for the prom, graduation preparation, pep rallies, and monthly academic achievement celebrations to name a few. She also functions as the site counselor in addition to her classroom duties. All of these activities are in addition to her engaging and organized classroom which covers the span of students in grades K-12.

As the 2012-13 LKSD Teacher of the Year, Simon will be eligible for nomination for the Alaska Teacher of the Year next spring.
