Lower Kuskokwim moose hunt set to close early

by Angela Denning-Barnes on September 7, 2012

The Unit 18 fall moose hunt on the Lower Kuskokwim will close Saturday at 11:59 p.m. Although the quota hasn’t been met, game managers anticipate it will be by closing time. As of Friday afternoon, 64 moose harvests had been reported to game managers. Ten were taken on federal land and 54 on state land.

The hunt was open September 1-10, but both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are closing it early.

Phyllip Perry, Area Management Biologist with the State, says the weather is improving and they anticipate the quota of 100 antlered bulls to be reached by closing time. The quota on state land is 81, the quota on federal land is 19.

Hunters are required to report their catches within 24 hours.
