Students from the Lower Yukon School District are competing with the state’s top teams in the GCI Alaska Academic Decathlon this week. Students from Scammon Bay, Pilot Station, Marshall, Mountain Village, and Emmonak are on the team.

These participants rose up from the District competition held locally. Each student competes in 10 events: like economics, essay, art, interview, language and literature, math, music, science. They take one written test in seven of the subjects. A team-style relay race called the super quiz is a highlight of the event. This year’s theme is “World War I.”

The decathlon is is designed to include students from all academic abilities and achievement levels. The winning team will represent Alaska at the national championships in Hawaii.
