The village of Newtok located near the Bering Sea in the Y-K Delta has a new website documenting its efforts to relocate to higher ground on Nelson Island, about nine miles away. The site newtokmoves.org gives updates on the village as it develops the new location, known as Mertarvik.

The Associated Press reports that the website aims to follow the multi-agency endeavor with regular updates. There is a tab for donations on the site, which states the village wants to raise money rather than relying solely on limited government funding.

Since the work began several years ago, Newtok has made gradual progress on developing Mertarvik including construction of the foundation for an emergency evacuation center that later will be used as tribal offices, a clinic and community hall.

The website says no progress has been made since six homes were completed last year.
