Plowed ice road opens up near Bethel

Shopping opportunities have opened up on the Lower Kuskokwim as ice roads have been plowed from Bethel to Akiachak, Kwethluk, and to Akiak, about 30 miles upriver.

Akiak plowed a road to the “Y”, located downriver of Kwethluk on December 27-28. Akiachak’s road got put in a few days ago.

Akiak’s Native Community and City worked together on their road, using city equipment and ANC workers.

Charity Jasper with the City of Akiak says people look forward to the plowed road to have easier access to shopping at Bethel’s bigger stores.

“People get excited about it,” said Jasper. “And people travel when they hear [about it]. They bring their vehicles from Bethel to here.”

Jasper says Bethel’s grocery stores are main shopping attractions.
