Police Confirm Identity of Woman Killed in House Fire

by Ben Matheson on May 2, 2014

Police are confirming the identify of the woman who died in a house fire on 6th Avenue on Tuesday in Bethel. Lt. Andre Achee says 27-year-old Janis Martha Mary Guest died Tuesday. A full report from the medical examiners office is still forthcoming.

Fire Investigators don’t know what caused the fire. Police say it could still be a criminal case until proved otherwise. Two intoxicated people were escorted out of the home and later interviewed by police.

Fire Chief George Young says the fire may have started downstairs and raced up stairwell and created a chimney effect. He originally said the fire was highly suspicious based on conversation with a woman who was at the home, plus the fire’s rapid spread.

Police and Fire Marshal investigations are ongoing.
