The Bethel Police Department does not plan to release the name of the officer who killed a Bethel man nearly two weeks ago until the investigation is complete. 24-year-old Sam Alexie Jr. was shot and killed October 2, at a residence located at 188 East Avenue. Police say Alexie pointed a rifle at officers before an officer killed him with one round.

In a written statement Bethel Police Chief, Larry Eleraton, said they will wait until the completion of the investigation before releasing the officer’s name or other information directly related to the incident. He says the case is currently with the Attorney General’s office.

According to police department policy, the involved officer was required to be off duty for at least three days but the officer is back to full duty. Elarton said all the participants and agencies involved that night had a critical incident debriefing. Police staff also met with the department’s psychologist.

Alaska State Troopers and the Alaska Bureau of Investigation assisted the police department in the investigation of the incident.
