ADFG Announces Year's First Lower Yukon Fall Chum Commercial Opening

Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced this year’s first fall chum commercial fishing opening on the Lower Yukon River, District One. The nine-hour opening takes place Monday, July 18 from 3 p.m. until 12 p.m., midnight. 

Gillnets are restricted to six-inch or smaller mesh size. Set gillnets cannot exceed 150 fathoms, or 900 feet. Drift gill nets cannot exceed 50 fathoms, or 300 feet.

Subsistence salmon fishing in District One is closed from 12 hours before to 12 hours after the commercial opening. Subsistence salmon fishing closes at 3 a.m. Monday, July 18 and will reopen at 12 p.m., noon, Tuesday, July 19.

Subsistence fishermen may use four-inch or smaller mesh size gillnets to target non-salmon species during the subsistence salmon closure. Set gillnets cannot exceed 150 fathoms, or 900 feet. Drift gill nets cannot exceed 50 fathoms, or 300 feet.
